Skye-based writer's acclaimed new novel
27 May 2005

Taking refuge in a remote island community in North Uist, 47-year-old Rose Leonard cocoons herself in work, silence and solitude in a house by the sea. Haunted by a shattered past, Rose’s greatest desire is to be left in peace to create her art and to maintain control of her life and her sanity. But her resolve is tested when she meets the sensitive, but equally fragile Calum -- a younger man whose own experience of pain and suffering touches her deeply and forces her to face her inner demons. Again.

A book about madness, memory and mountaineering. Emotional Geology defies categorisation. The book’s narrative style is spare and kaleidoscopic; the plot layered in time like an archaeological dig. It is a novel interspersed with poems, a study of the relationship between madness and creativity, and above all, a love story -- filled with passion and paint-stripping honesty.

About the Author:
Linda Gillard lives and writes on the Isle of Skye. A graduate of Bristol University, she trained as an actress and wrote freelance articles from her rural home in Cambridgeshire to keep herself fed. For twelve years, she wrote a humour column for Ideal Home, before turning her hand to primary school teaching. She and her family have since relocated to Skye where she now focuses on her writing full-time.

Linda’s hope when writing Emotional Geology was that it would not only entertain, but also enlighten readers about the terrifying aspects of manic-depression. According to a recent survey, 26% of the British population do not believe mental illness is a genuine illness. Linda hopes to change people’s minds and give sufferers hope and support. Emotional Geology is her first full-length novel.

Emotional Geology will be available in bookshops across the country from 27th June for £7.99
