Solid Rock in Brae
26 May 2005

The final event, for this season, of Shetland Arts Trust youth rock music development programme entitled ‘Solid Rock’ takes place in Brae on Saturday the 4th June and is open to everyone aged 12 – 18 years, resident in the North Mavin, Brae or Delting areas.

The day begins with a music workshop in the Brae Youth Centre, running from 1pm – 5pm, concentrating on guitar, bass, drums and vocals. There will also be information provided on PA and lighting techniques and a number of music business elements such as music copyright issues, recording successful demo CD’s and how to attract attention to you or your band from the music industry.

Tutors for the day will be Brian Nicholson (guitar) Ian Perry (bass) Garry Park (Drums) and Pamela Smith (vocals), with music business advice provided by Davie Gardner from Shetland Arts Trust.

The workshops will be followed by an alcohol free youth gig entitled ‘Lights Out’, running from 7.30 until 10pm in the function room of the Brae Hotel (Northern Lights). Heading the bill will be the ‘Victims of Authority’ supported by two Brae bands ‘Amnesia’ and ‘Hidden Agenda’.

Davie Gardner from Shetland Arts Trust said “These workshops and youth gigs have proved to be increasingly popular and I think everyone who has been involved to date has gained a great deal from them, even the tutors. Some young bands have already benefited from involvement in this programme, including having occasional opportunities to perform outwith Shetland. There is a real wealth of musical talent in this particular so we are really looking forward to the day up north”.

The workshops cost £2 per person and entry to the gig at night is £3 on the door.
