Landseer in the Highlands is the first exhibition ever to be devoted to the greatest British animal painter of the nineteenth century. The National Galleries of Scotland's exhibition provides a unique opportunity to explore the full range of work by Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) in Scotland from the 1820s to the 1860s and comprises 83 loans drawn from the most prestigious private and public collections in Britain, including the Royal Collection. This fascinating selection encompasses literary pictures inspired by the novels and poems of Sir Walter Scott, exquisite Highland landscapes painted for the artist's own pleasure, perceptive studies of Highland social life and customs, and heroic studies of deer informed by the first hand knowledge of a practising sportsman.
This exhibition is the third blockbuster exhibition to be mounted in the newly refurbished Royal Scottish Academy building by the National Galleries of Scotland. The first two exhibitions held in this impressive venue were Monet: The Seine and the Sea (2003) and The Age of Titian (2004). The Monet show was the most popular exhibition ever mounted by the NGS with a total of 173,000 visitors.
