Scottish Guitar Quartet to visit Shetland
09 March 2005

One of Scotland’s leading contemporary guitar groups will visit Shetland next week to perform their first concert in the islands, in Lerwick Town Hall, and deliver a number of school concerts and technical workshops as part of Shetland Arts Trust music development project and the schools music festival.

The Scottish Guitar Quartet comprises four of Scotland leading acoustic guitarists and composers: Ged Brockie, Nigel Clark, Malcolm MacFarlane and Kevin McKenzie. They draw on jazz, classical, celtic and world music influences and blend these styles together to produce an eclectic sound that is both unique and powerful.

The SGQ are fast becoming known as one of the Scottish music scene’s most exciting acts, with plaudits such as “national asset” being bandied about in reviews. The band have gained this formidable reputation by refusing to be boxed in to one particular genre, added to the fact they are all highly regarded performers and composers in their own right. The quartets intricately arranged original material includes evocative pieces inspired by the Scottish landscape, punctuated by re-workings from the likes of Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. All in all it should make for a varied and exciting performance, attractive to all lovers of top quality guitar music.

The concert takes place in Lerwick Town Hall on Wednesday 16th March at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Shetland Arts s Trust office in Pitt Lane priced £8 and £6. Any unsold tickets will be available on the door on the evening, but you are advised to buy in advance to avoid disappointment.
