The next in the ongoing series of traditional sessions for young musicians, sponsored by Shetland Arts Trust and the Lounge, Lerwick, will take place in the upper Lounge on Tuesday the 1st March from 7pm – 10pm

All young traditional musicians, age 12 – 18 years of age, playing any kind of instrument, are invited to come along and take part. You don’t have to be a good or experienced player to take part in the sessions either, as there is a slower, beginners section from 7pm – 8.30, where experienced traditional musicians including Violet Tulloch and Alex Hutchison will be on hand to offer guidance and support, and a slot for more experienced young musicians from 8.30 – 10pm. The sessions also offer the young musicians the opportunity to play a range of tunes with some of Shetland’s outstanding and well-known traditional musicians.

Shetland Arts Trust Music Development Officer Davie Gardner said “These sessions are proving to be very popular with young musicians. They are an informal and fun way of playing and taking part in traditional music activity and the hopefully compliment the more formal tutoring etc that happens in schools. Some of our finest traditional musicians have agreed to come along and guide the young musicians during the sessions and I am indebted to them for their commitment in doing so. The Lounge is synonymous with traditional music in Shetland, so it’s great to be involved in a partnership with them to promote these sessions. The young folk also seem to enjoy playing there, where so many legendary names have performed in the past and still do so to this day”.

Audiences of any age are also invited to come along and hear the young musicians in action. Entry is free of charge and the event is alcohol and smoke free.
