Aberfeldy hosts writers and musicians in anti-poverty event
24 February 2005

The Highland Perthshire town of Aberfeldy gathers in artists and an audience for a night of words and music in aid of a global problem.  From Heartland to the World, in Aberfeldy Town Hall on Saturday March 5th, features rising stars of the musical and literary worlds.

The line-up for the night includes local musical and literary talents Alan Brown , Claire Hewitt  and Linda Cracknell .  Yorkshire-man Tim Turnbull  is described as ‘one of the most sought-after performance poets’ who has appeared all over Britain and the U.S., both on his own and with the slam team ‘Heart of Darkness’.  Award-winning poet and novelist Anne Macleod  now lives on the Black Isle but was born in Aberfeldy cottage hospital when her father came to work there in the early days of the Hydro-electric schemes.  A poet, writer and photographer, Brian Johnstone's  work has been published widely in Scotland as well as in Greece and Poland.   He is Director of StAnza, Scotland's only major poetry festival, held annually in St Andrews. These are just some of the event’s highlights.

Aberfeldy hosts this cabaret night to raise funds and launch awareness locally of the MAKE POVERTY HISTORY campaign .   Natural disasters kill nearly fifty times as many people in poor countries as in rich ones.  Recent events have highlighted the vulnerability of the world’s poor in a very tragic way.  Funds raised on the night will go to Oxfam and UNICEF.

Worth attending for the chance to win raffle prizes including  jewellery by acclaimed silversmith, Malcolm Appleby, and a trip for four with Highland Safaris.  Coming in the middle of Fair Trade Fortnight, goods on sale will help to support livelihoods in self-help communities.  Wine and nibbles are served as part of the ticket price.

From Heartland to the World - An evening of Words, Music and Wine to help MAKE POVERTY HISTORY.  7.30pm, Saturday March 5th, Aberfeldy Town Hall.  Tickets available in advance from Aberfeldy Tourist Information Centre for £10 (tel. 01887 820276) or at the door.  Every penny, except the charge for the Hall, will go to charity.
