Christopher Brookmyre goes from the page to the stage for the very first time with 7:84 Theatre Company's tour of 'Boiling the Frog'.
With recent political forays into the world of tabloid sleaze, Brookmyre’s novel, Boiling a Frog, touches a raw nerve. This thriller takes on politicians and their entanglement in spin and captures perfectly the fear generated by the mere whiff of a scandal.
Add to the mix a sprinkling of Catholicism, a dose of murder and a dab of kiddie porn what you have is a worryingly believable commentary on Scottish society.
“It would be difficult for me to overstress how flattered I am by 7:84 adapting one of my novels. I am terrifically excited by the prospect of seeing this story updated, particularly because five years on, the political landscape may have changed, but the aspects that the novel addressed have not altered much. I sought to hold a mirror up to this in 2000, and look forward to 7:84 repeating the dose.” Christopher Brookmyre
Ian Beadie, tabloid editor turned PR guru lingers like a sleaze soaked Big Brother, bankrolled by a shady Bishop, anxious to change the public perception of the Catholic Church. With politicians in his pocket and ready made scandals infiltrating the hard-drives of the new Parliament, Beadie plans to bring Scotland to its knees and will go to any length to make it happen.
There’s only one man that can match him and that’s investigative journalist Jack Parlabane. A man with no aversion to a bit of sleaze, Parlabane smells a rat - he’ll just have to get out of prison first.
Adapted by Scottish Playwright, Christopher Deans and directed by Lorenzo Mele, Boiling a Frog is the first adaptation of a Christopher Brookmyre novel for the stage. Stewart Porter takes on the role of Beadie and Gary McInnes plays the unlikely hero Parlabane with excellent support from Kate Dickie, Linda McLaughlin, Robbie Jack and Ross Stenhouse.
Boiling a Frog will be touring throughout Scotland during February, March and April.
