Solo Contemporary Dance Tour Premiered
17 September 2004

Following the success of his first one man show Map in 2002, David Hughes, 'one of the most gifted dancers around.' (The Guardian), will premiere an outstanding programme of four solo works at Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre, on 2 October 2004 before touring throughout Scotland and the rest of the UK until spring 2005.

The vibrant programme, entitled David Hughes, includes the premieres of especially commissioned works created by three of Europe's leading contemporary choreographers, Barcelona based Cesc Gelabert (whose international success includes a solo created this year for Mikhail Baryshnikov), Pit Fong Loh and Javier de Frutos (nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Dance, 2004 Olivier Awards), together with the revival of the hugely popular L'Apres-Midi d'un Faune by Siobhan Davies.

'THE MEASURER'
(15 minutes)
choreography: Cesc Gelabert
modern jazz tracks: Lester Bowie and Max Roach
design: Lydia Azzopardi

'INVISIBLE / INVINCIBLE II'
(15 minutes)
choreography: Pit Fong Loh
music: Bamboo Orchestra
inspired by kung fu martial art and the Shaolin Buddhist monks

'EL UNO Y MEDIO'
(15 minutes)
choreography: Javier de Frutos
music: Jerez
design: Jean-Marc Puissant
de Frutos casts Hughes as Jason, after his estranged wife
Medea has murdered their children

'L'APRES-MIDI D'UN FAUNE'
(10 minutes)
choreography: Siobhan Davies
music: Claude Debussy
a modern take on the famous Nijinsky ballet

'The rewrite of L'Apres-midi d'un Faune, which Davies has choreographed for him, makes no apologies for comparing Hughes to the original faun, Nijinsky.

Both dancers combine physical gravitas with an astonishing alertness and delicacy. Hughes is also an innately dramatic dancer. Even though he seems to be telling important and interesting stories as he dances, his own personality remains a secret.' (Judith Mackrell, The Guardian)

At every venue the performance will be followed by an after-show 'Meet-the-Artist' session... an opportunity for audiences to access some of the finest contemporary choreography, performed by the very best.

David Hughes 'one of Britain's most respected dancers' (The Scotsman) danced with London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Rambert, Phoenix and dance companies led by Siobhan Davies, Janet Smith, Darshan Singh Buller, David Massingham, and Mark Bruce.  He created the original role of the Swan in Adventures in Motion Pictures' famous Swan Lake.

David Hughes is funded by the Scottish Arts Council and co-commissioned by Dance Base Edinburgh and ROH2 at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, with additional support from Highlands & Islands Enterprise through HI~Arts.
