CBBC is one of the largest providers of children’s television in the world and seeks to inspire, entertain and innovate for a child audience ranging from approximately 6-13 years of age. Tartan Smalls is a joint initiative between CBBC Scotland and Scottish Screen to create new and exciting work for this demanding audience.  Tartan Smalls offers an opportunity for new or existing talent to enter this exciting creative genre.

Applications are welcome from individual writers or from writer/producer/director teams. Where necessary Scottish Screen and CBBC will introduce writers to prospective producers and directors.

After the initial shortlist three projects will be selected by a panel consisting of representatives from Scottish Screen and CBBC Scotland as well as individuals from the independent sector.  Successful applicants will be awarded a Tartan Smalls commission where usual CBBC contractual procedures will apply.  With additional support from Scottish Screen National Lottery Fund, awards will be for £40,000. 

Scripts of all genre are welcome, but tone and focus should be inspired by and be appropriate for the 16:35 or 17:00 weekly drama slots on CBBC1. It is important that the duration and the cost of the film is considered.  Projects exceeding 9 minutes in length will not be selected.

Films must be produced in Scotland with a commitment to employing Scottish based crews.  It is expected that out of the three key roles of the writer, director and producer, at least two out of the three should be based in Scotland. Previous Tartan Smalls award-winners and full-time students are not eligible.
