Arts activities at An Tobar, the Tobermory Arts Centre have increased this summer with the appointment of a full time Visual Arts and Crafts Officer. Funded by the National Lottery, local artist Alicia Hendrick took up the post in June and has already organised two artist in residence projects and a full summer programme of art classes for adults and children (Check www.antobar.co.uk for details).
Doug Robertson has just completed the first part of his Island Sketchbook project, the aim of which is to create seven small sketchbooks based on various areas of Mull to be exhibited next year. As part of this project Doug has led some inspiring workshops encouraging people in the community to create their own record in sketchbook form.
During August painter Anne Devine will spend a month travelling to a selection of islands that surround Mull and returning to her studio at An Tobar/Tormore each evening to develop work from her interactions with the land, sea, wildlife and people as part of the Wee Islands Residency. Anne will reach these islands by taking passage on a variety of seafaring boats from trip boats to fishing boats. Join Anne for a days painting on Ulva (29th July), Staffa (4th Aug), and Lunga (10th Aug). The project is supported by: Turus Mara, Alternative Boat Hire, Davy Kirkpatrick, Jane Griffith and Sealife Surveys.
During August An Tobar will also be promoting local artists and makers at the Bunessan and Salen show (6th/12 Aug) where artists from Mull and Iona will exhibit and demonstrate their work. Alicia hopes to put together an artist/makers register for Mull and Iona, which can be used to promote their work both on and off the island.
The successful exhibition of work by local artists Andy & Helen Mortley will come to a close at the end of July to be followed by Newcastle-based artist Lisa deLarny who will be exhibiting her latest paintings and sculptures during the month of August.
Director Gordon MacLean said, “Having an additional full time member of staff concentrating on developing the Visual Arts & Crafts will add a whole new dimension to the work we do at An Tobar”.
