The hills of Wester Ross will be alive with the
sounds of traditional music once again this summer as Fèisean nan Gàidheal, the
National Association of the Fèis movement stages Fèis Alba 2004 at Plockton from
2-5 July. Following on from last year’s highly successful event, this
four-day course aims to introduce young traditional musicians to the key skills
they may require in their future semi or fully professional careers.
The event is open to young people aged 16 - 25 who already have skills at the
upper intermediate and beyond in traditional Gaelic music and song. Key
daily themes will include Composition, Tutoring, Recording and Performance,
presented by a wealth of tutors who have earned reputations as leaders in their
particular fields.
It is hoped that during the tutoring practical session, on Saturday 3rd July,
young people from the local area will be invited in for a lesson,
delivered by the Fèis Alba students, under the watchful eye of the more
experienced tutor team. As well as this, participants will have the
opportunity to compose, record and even perform their own material at the final
concert in PlocktonHigh
School on Monday 5th July. And,
because the Fèisean are well-known as enjoyable and social occasions, there may
even be the odd session or dance to make things really go with a swing!
Newly appointed Fèisean nan Gàidheal
Development Officer for the North Highlands, Nicola
Marshall said, "Fèis Alba 2004 represents a unique opportunity for 16 - 25 year
olds interested in a professional career in traditional music to explore a range
of key skills. Last year’s event was a great success, with the key
elements of high quality participants, tutors and venue coming together to
produce some excellent results. I would recommend this course to any young
musician who has serious aspirations to make a career in traditional
music. To maintain the healthy tutor to participant ratio required at this
level, places are limited and will be offered on a first come first served
basis, so book your place quickly!"
As always, Fèisean nan Gàidheal has arranged
a team of high-quality tutors who will lead the Professional Development
Weekend. They are Valerie Bryan, Brian
O’hEadhra, Gordon Gunn, Ingrid
Henderson and Dougie Pincock,
with additional master class input from Mary Ann Kennedy, Sandy Brechin, Nick
Turner and Rae McColl.
This programme is part-financed by Skye and Lochalsh Enterprise, The Highland
Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, The Scottish
Arts Council, The Scottish Arts Council National Lottery Fund and
Fèisean nan Gàidheal.
