Helmsdale Heritage Society was established in the early 1980s when a small group of local people committed to creating a community heritage centre for the village residents and visitors to Sutherland. Now over twenty years later, it has pulled off another remarkable coup by transforming and adding to its facilities, helped by voluntary support that reduced costs by a huge margin.

| HSE takes up the offer to visit Shetland Following discussions between HSE representatives and Alistair Carmichael MP the HSE confirmed today that they would now make the trip to Shetland to review the inclusion of the North Ness Fuel Depot in their high risk site classification. In a further development the HSE has also confirmed that only one alteration is required to one tank on the North Ness site to automatically remove the tank from the list, and in doing so opening up the opportunity for development within the area affected by their guidance. All that is required is an overflow device to be attached to the petrol tank and work is now underway to cost this work and open up negotiations with the operators of the site. 17 March 2008 |

| Crafts Creative Development Bursaries - £10,000 Through a new and unique partnership with the Scottish Arts Council (SAC), up to three Craft Funded Placements at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD) are being offered to creative practitioners, running from 1st July – 30th September 2008. These are being offered on a pilot basis through the SAC’s Crafts Creative Development Awards which support individuals to create new work through awards of up to £10,000.

| The Garrison invaded by Them Shetland Arts’ Film Wednesday season continues at The Garrison on 12th March, but not with the film originally intended for that evening. As the DVD distribution rights for Ringu appear to have been withdrawn, the programmers have substituted something equally spine-chilling. Them, a film by directors David Moreau and Xavier Palud, is proof that although they do not do it often, the French are as capable as the Japanese of scaring the living daylights out of an audience.
